As a child in South Carolina, Bass spent a lot of life on bridges, crabbing and biking the barrier islands near Bluffton and Charleston. Today, life on the coast of Maine insures bridges stay a deep part of her life. Combining bridge engineering with sculptural form as a way of celebrating joy and humor in the culture of the community is a challenge she always considers.
On nearby beaches she collects shell fragments, trapezoids and triangles. "The energy that binds us always with the natural world is so immediate and deep that I live in a state of constant wonder."
I imagine ways to build bridges that convey this explosion of energy like stems of bold blossoms.
What a cultural opportunity it would be to gather engineers, boat-builders, artists, poets to design for the the continued nurturing of a community."
